Meditation Instruction
Step 1 Pick the right location.
You need to select a quiet location as your meditation spot. It could be indoors and outdoors. It only need to devoid of noise and distractions. Even your mobile phone should be switched off. Absolutely no disturbance and ventilation should be adequate as well. Good start.
Step 2 Adopt a comfortable position
You should be comfortable. This applies to your clothing as well as your body posture. You may sit down or lie down. You could sit on a chair or meditation bench or may actually sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Find the position that suits you.
Step 3 Get into the meditation posture
A good meditation posture is helpful. You need to sit straight. To achieve this objective, sway your body from left to right, right to left, backwards and forwards, then center your spine. Allow your shoulders to carry the weight of your head and tilt your chin slightly towards your chest.
You may need a meditation pillow to help your posture.
Step 4 Get into meditation mode
Relax yourself. Relax every muscle of your body from head to toe. Place both hands together on your thighs with the palms of both hands facing each other, fingers interlocked and both thumbs touching one another. Let the weight of body drop. Drop your shoulders and breathe normally with your mouth closed preferably.
Step 5 Chose a focal point
Breathe easy. Focus on your breathing cycle – the breathing in, the breathing out. Take about three breaths through the nose. As you breathe in, follow the flow of your breath through the back of your body and follow your breathing out air flow through the front of your body. This is best described as circular breathing pattern.
Then choose a focal point in your immediate surroundings. Choose something in front of you at eye level or the floor of where you are sitting and concentrate on it.
Step 6 Deal with distractions
When you are new to meditation, your greatest problem is dealing with a wandering mind. The trick is not to tackle distracting thoughts head-on by trying to stamp on them for want of a better word, but to try and re-focus your mind on your focal point. Remain still. The circular breathing exercisemay help you deal with your wandering mind.
Step 7 Come out of meditation gently
Gently “re-awaken” yourself out of meditation and relax for a while before you engage in any serious activity.
Learn to meditate for about ten to fifteen minutes every day and gradually increase your meditation times. Your target should be about thirty to forty five minutes a day.
However please note that it will take time for you to master the art of meditation.
