Our lives are busy. That means stressful. We all know that. It needn’t be like that every day. You need to calm down, wind down and switch off to ease your mind.

However although we know this is what we should be doing, we have a wrong concept of how to go about achieving this.

Unfortunately we end up embarking on stimulating activities like watching movies, reading a good book instead of relaxing the mind.

Meditation is one surefire way of relaxing your mind and body and I will give simple steps in this short but straight-to-the point meditation guide.

A lot of people are of the opinion that meditation involves sitting alone for hours on end or having to drill deeply into your innermost thoughts for a couple of hours or making some funny incoherent sounds. Wrong.

Learning how to meditate is easy once you know that the process is essentially any activity you undertake that enables your mind to apply the brakes and be still for a pre-determined time. You keep it as long as you want to. It’s your call.

Some other people also feel they are unable to rid their mind of worries and stresses of everyday life. This is true to some extent and I have to say that before I learnt how to meditate, I must confess that I did belong to this school of thought.

However, once you get into the habit, you will be amazed at how easy it gets with time.  I used to have a very active mind such that I couldn’t fall asleep at night but all that has changed with getting into the meditation mode. I dare say if I can, you too can.

For those who still have doubts, I have a secret weapon that I will reveal at the end of this article that will make the entire process a breeze. It is my short cut meditation guide.

There are many ways to meditate but my meditation guide here is about the simplest form. Let’s start with the simplest, master it first before stepping it up.

Can I say upfront that one important aspect of meditation is to focus on your breathing. You need to learn how to breathe easily and shield your mind away from being stimulated. Yes, learning how to concentrate is not easy I must confess but with practice, you will get the hang of it.

Meditation Guide Start Up Session

  1. Select a quiet environment. Choose a place in your home, office or even the outdoors like your garden or the park where you can shut out all distractions and disturbances that all seem to get in the way of our inner peace these days.
  2. Get into a comfortable position. You may sit or lie down if you prefer. Just bear in mind that if you lie down, you may just fall asleep.
  3. More on position. If you sit, do keep your spine straight with your chin slightly lowered towards your chest regardless of whether you are sitting on a chair or on the floor or even sitting with your legs crossed.
  4. Now start getting into the initial meditation mode by relaxing every single muscle of your body and I mean every muscle from your head to your toe. Next, you need to concentrate on your breathing.
  5. Focus on every aspect of your breath i.e breathing in, breathing out and the little gaps in between both. Take about three deep breaths through your nose. Follow the flow of your breath as it goes into your lungs and as you exhale as well. Then breathe normally and repeat the cycle.
  6. Choose a focal point as you meditate. Your focal point could be an object in your immediate surroundings like the floor or something right in front of you at eye level, something soothing to the mind or you may just close your eyes. My focal point that works for me is the blue sea.
  7. Cushion distractions. If you find yourself getting distracted, try not to do battle with those distractions but instead gently re-direct your thoughts back to your focal point.
  8. Gently “re-awaken” yourself and move gently for the first couple of minutes at the end of your meditation session.

That’s it. Practice, practice, practice and you will get there and with ease over time.

Try to meditate for about ten to fifteen minutes a day and gradually increase the length of time as you get better at it.
